Question 1

Is PFAS-free DWR as good as the old fluorinated kind?

Accepted Answer

For water, it's close. It doesn't repel oil and dirt as well, so you'll likely clean and re-treat a bit more often. For most hikers, that's a fair trade.

Question 2

Can I re-waterproof a Gore-Tex jacket?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Re-proofing restores the DWR on the face fabric; it doesn't touch the membrane. Gear Aid and Nikwax both list their PFAS-free treatments as suitable for waterproof-breathable fabrics including GORE-TEX. Follow the jacket's care label.

Question 3

Should I use spray-on or wash-in?

Accepted Answer

Spray-on for most rain shells, especially if the jacket has a wicking inner lining. Wash-in is faster for multiple garments or unlined shells.

Question 4

Does washing a rain jacket ruin it?

Accepted Answer

No. Dirt and oils ruin the DWR faster than washing does. Use a technical cleaner, skip fabric softener, and follow the care label.

Question 5

My jacket still leaks after re-proofing. Now what?

Accepted Answer

Then it's probably the membrane, seam tape or a hole, not the DWR. Check the inside for peeling or bubbles, patch small holes, and contact the brand about repair before replacing it.
